The town takes its name from the Miami Indians and is pronounced "My-am-uh". Wayland C. Lykins was the son of a missionary to the Peoria Indians. He wanted to be a cattle rancher and so came to Indian Territory where there would be plenty of grazing land. Continuing to follow his dream, he went to Washington D.C., got the town site of Miami approved, and on March 2, 1891, Miami became the first chartered town in Indian Territory. |

In a few short months, GEFFE was established as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, adopted bylaws, organized a charter board, and held its first annual fund-raising banquet. With the proceeds raised from the first banquet in 1998, GEFFE awarded its first two grant cycles and the benefits of GEFFE had begun. |
