The dam has 21 floodgates on the main spillway and 21 on the east spillways. Rising 150 feet above the river bed. Streambed Elevation: 610.00 feet. Top of Dam Elevation: 757.00 feet. Pensacola Dam holds the waters that form Grand Lake's 1,300 miles of scenic shoreline, about 66 miles long, surrounding approximately 47,000 surface acres of water. The town takes its name from the Miami Indians and is pronounced "My-am-uh". Wayland C. Lykins was the son of a missionary to the Peoria Indians. He wanted to be a cattle rancher and so came to Indian Territory where there would be plenty of grazing land. Continuing to follow his dream, he went to Washington D.C., got the town site of Miami approved, and on March 2, 1891, Miami became the first chartered town in Indian Territory. |
