 Route 66 - Clanton's Cafe
A Vinita Family Tradition Since 1927 - Clanton's has been featured in Gourmet Magazine for its outstanding Chicken Fried Steak. Columnist Michael Stern was traveling through Vinita in search of the best Chicken Fried Steak on Route 66. He had tried many steaks of various qualities and was impressed with the delicious Chicken Fry served at Clanton's. You can find the article in the February 2006 issue of Gourmet Magazine. A wide variety of home style meals can be found at this restaurant. Chicken fried chicken, hearty hamburgers, home made french fries, creamy mashed potatoes and calf fries.

 Main street of Quapaw
This muddy street at Quapaw would someday become part of Route 66, but in this photo, taken about 1920, is anything but America's most famous highway.

 Ottawa Co. Roadmaps
A 1937 road map that was distributed at Gulf gasoline stations along Route 66 and other roads shows the Tri-State lead and zinc mining district as it looked then. Many of these small villages are completely gone now. Route 66 divides Ottawa County into half by entering just south of Baxter Springs, Kansas and leaving just south of Afton.

 Afton, Oklahoma and Afton Station
Afton, Oklahoma was established as a farming community in 1886 and got it's name from the River Afton in Scotland - prominently mentioned in a Robert Burns poem. In the hey-day of Route 66 Afton was a prosperous town, but today the Interstate has taken its toll on this small Oklahoma town. There is much to see and take pictures of in Afton though. Historic architecture, vintage gas stations and fading auto courts can still be found throughout the town.

 World's Largest Totem Pole
Along historic Route 66 sits a great example of the connection of worlds – World’s Largest Things and Grassroots Art Environments. Ed Galloway’s World’s Largest Totem Pole is a massive concrete structure, built by a retired man as a tribute to Native Americans. Like most Grassroots artists, it’s an encompassing environment, impossible to move, and completely amazing.

Miami, Oklahoma and the Coleman Theater
Miami, Oklahoma is a vibrant Route 66 town that celebrates its Route 66 heritage. Part of that heritage includes a true Route 66 gem on this part of the Mother Road - the Coleman Theater. Miami (pronounced MY-AM-AH) got its start back in 1890 as a trading post. In 1905 lead and zinc deposits were discovered in the area and the town boomed.
