Pryor, the seat of Mayes County, is a town of approximately 8, 500 interesting and diverse people. Additionally, there are at least half that many people living within a five-mile radius of the city limits. This population has created the demand for the cozy housing developments that are popping up everywhere in the rural community. Pryor is much larger than what can be initially perceived by individuals passing through this Oklahoma town. But the real reason for people to be drawn to Pryor, the real beauty of Pryor is: Her people think large. |

Afton, Oklahoma was established as a farming community in 1886 and got it's name from the River Afton in Scotland - prominently mentioned in a Robert Burns poem. In the hey-day of Route 66 Afton was a prosperous town, but today the Interstate has taken its toll on this small Oklahoma town. There is much to see and take pictures of in Afton though. Historic architecture, vintage gas stations and fading auto courts can still be found throughout the town. |

| Touring the Mother Road in Vinita, Oklahoma
Vinita, Oklahoma is a great historical Route 66 town. Driving along Route 66 you can see many examples of what Route 66 was like back in its hey-day. Vinita is the second oldest town in Oklahoma and was founded in 1871 when the railroad came through. It was originally named Downingville but the name was changed to honor Vinnie Ream, the sculptress of the life-sized statue of Lincoln at the United States Capitol. There are many surviving vintage Route 66 buildings in Vinita, from cafes to motels, gas stations and more. |

The Rogers County Historical Society is embarking on a major project to restore the upper large Totem Pole at Ed Galloway's Totem Pole Park. The large totem was restored in the 1990s, but this paint is pealing and the underlying concrete is starting to deteriorate. You can donate and see more of the restoration project in action by going to totempolepark.org. |
